Pete Tomlins

Head of Research and Innovation at Caristo Diagnostics

Pete Tomlins has a long and varied work experience in the medical field. Pete began their career in 2002 as a Senior Research Scientist and Technical Area Leader for Biophotonics at the National Physical Laboratory. Pete then moved to Oregon Health & Science University as a Visiting Scientist in 2006. In 2009, they were an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Dental Biomaterials at the University of Birmingham. From 2010 to 2013, they were a Head of International Foundation Pathway into Medicine and Dentistry, Lead for Statistical Methods in Clinical Research, Senior Lecturer, and Department Mentor at Queen Mary University of London. In 2013, they founded Tomlins Analytics Ltd, where they were a Director and Founder, Medical Research Consultant, and Medical Statistics Consultant. In 2018, they Co-Founded Z-Ray Imaging Ltd, where they worked on replacing dental X-Ray imaging with safe optical 3D images of dental tissue. In 2021, they began working at Caristo Diagnostics, where they are currently the Head of Research and Innovation and Acting CTO. In this role, they are leading research and development strategy across engineering, test and science teams to deliver AI technology in a Software as a Service medical device. Pete is also working with Python, Javascript, node, docker and AWS technologies to provide a scaleable and secure solution. Additionally, they are the Principal Research Scientist, leading a Machine Learning and AI research team to utilise the latest in cutting edge statistical techniques for quantifying Cardiac CT Images.

Pete Tomlins obtained their PhD from Cranfield University in 2007, where they studied Quantitative Assessment of Biological Material using Optical Coherence Tomography. Prior to that, they obtained a 1st Class BSc (hons) in Physics with Computational Physics from Lancaster University in 2002.
