Member Engagement Specialist at CASA DE MARYLAND

Member Engagement Specialist Sara Ramirez has been with CASA since 2007. Sara is the friendly and caring face that greets everyone who visits the MCC Welcome Center. She has trained thousands of immigrants to learn their constitutional rights. She has organized tenants and educated them on their rights and responsibilities, mobilizing them to fight against abuse and to pressure the authorities for structural changes in tenant laws in Montgomery County, Maryland. For several years as a Community Organizer, she served the community of day laborers, aided in the Workforce Development Program, and informed new members on their rights and responsibilities as members of CASA. She trained the daily workers to help run the Wheaton Welcome Center themselves one day a week, empowering their leadership skills through project management. She trained hundreds of daily workers as captains of marches/rallies in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. She has raised awareness and mobilized thousands in the fight for a Maryland driver’s licenses for all, the fight against wage theft, the fight against brutality and police abuse, the fight to increasing the minimum wage, and many more. Sara is a graduate of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala and holds a Master of Arts in the Legal and Social Areas. ‘We educate people to organize them. We don’t organize them to educate them. ‘
