Walter Spansel

Trustee at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada

Walter Spansel is a trustee at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. Walter previously served on the board of directors for the North American Transmission Forum, Inc. and as executive director of transmission for Southern California Edison (SCE).

Spansel was recruited to SCE in 2005 to replace an ineffective business model, design and implement a new organizational construct, and position transmission business line for long-term success. Walter led the human resources critical to achieve SCE's wires strategy, which was the execution of over $8B in capital expenditures. Walter provided the strategic planning, policy formation and executive management necessary to ensure that SCE's business objectives were achieved, including the quest for Operational Excellence. Walter directed and led a diverse, geographically disbursed, multi-disciplinary blue collar and white collar workforce of over 425 employees ($325M budget, $50M of which is O&M; 200 IBEW employees), and both union and non-union employees. The position also oversaw approximately 1000 contract employees. Walter served as SCE's executive sponsor for T&D safety leading all transmission, substation, distribution and carrier solutions craft leaders. Walter developed safety strategy refresh— included developing and implementing a leadership program with SafeMap International and an early medical intervention program with WorkCare.

Walter Spansel attended the University of New Orleans for their Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and their Master of Business Administration. Walter also attended The Wharton School for their Executive Development Program and Wharton Executive Education.
