Senior Aquaculture Scientist And Team Leader (finfish And Genetics) at Cawthron Institute

Jane Symonds has a rich and extensive work experience in the aquaculture industry. Jane started their career in 1993 as a Broodstock Manager at The New Zealand King Salmon Co. Ltd, where they worked until 2000. Jane then joined Aqua Bounty Canada Inc. as a Broodstock Development Manager, a role they held until 2003. Jane then joined Huntsman Marine Science Centre as the Director of Aquaculture, overseeing the management of aquaculture facilities, staff, and developing research, education, and technology transfer to industry. In 2007, they joined NIWA as a Principal Scientist and Aquaculture Broodstock Specialist, and stayed until 2015. At NIWA, Jane specialized in finfish aquaculture and led a research program on feed efficiency in chinook salmon. In 2015, they joined Cawthron Institute as a Senior Aquaculture Scientist, leading various applied aquaculture research projects and specializing in genetics and selective breeding technologies. Jane is currently an Adjunct Senior Researcher at the Institute for Marine Science and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania.

Jane Symonds received a BSc Hons degree in Genetics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, where they studied from 1981 to 1985. Following this, they pursued a PhD in Molecular Population Genetics from the Australian National University, completing their studies from 1986 to 1991.
