Sunny Sun

Associate Director & Head, Computational Biology at Cellarity

Sunny Sun is currently the Associate Director and Head of Computational Biology at Cellarity. Prior to this, Sunny was a Data Scientist at Biogen where they worked on Translational Integrative Analytics. At Biogen, Sunny was responsible for improving the Causal Reasoning algorithm to link gene expression profiles with GWAS risk variants of Parkinson’s disease. Sunny also applied integrative network analytical approaches to identify and propose new drug targets of Parkinson’s disease.

Sunny has always been interested in the intersection of computation and biology and how it can be applied to real-world problems. This led them to their current role at Cellarity where they are responsible for building multiple key capabilities of the single-cell-biology-centered compute platform. Sunny has also led the application of the platform from ideation to early exploration to late drug development across multiple disease areas. In addition, Sunny has built and scaled the computational biology team from 1 to 8 people across all drug discovery programs.

Sunny Sun has a PhD in Basic Medical Sciences/Cell Biology from NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Sunny also has a BS in Biology/Biological Sciences from Fudan University and an MS in Bioinformatics and Cell Biology from New York University. Sunny is also a certified Neural Networks and Deep Learning Specialist from Coursera.

Sunny Sun reports to Laurens Kruidenier, CSO. They work with Atli Thorarensen - VP & Head, Chemistry, Matt Goddeeris - VP & Head, Biology.
