Erika Lewis began their career in 2007 as an Editorial Intern at MSP Communications. Erika then joined Teach for America as a Corps Member, where they taught in a summer school program run by TFA for students in Houston public schools. Later that year, they became a 5th Grade Teacher at Navajo Elementary, where they designed and implemented integrated, multi-subject 5th grade curriculum to 22 students. In 2008, they became the UVA Young Writers Workshop Head Counselor, where they acted as a 24-hour head residential counselor for 90 students and 15 residential counselors. In 2009, they were promoted to UVA Young Writers Workshop Residential Program Director, where they managed daily residential operations of 2- and 3-week overnight sessions. In 2010, Erika Lewis began working at the Charles Armstrong School as a Technology Integration Specialist & Makerspace Founding Teacher, where they established the Armstrong Makerspace for students to explore, play, build, and create in a safe and structured environment. Erika also launched school-wide digital citizenship initiative and created a teacher resource bank with monthly themes. Additionally, they led the Innovative Classroom team to acquire furniture to promote more flexible and student-centered classroom environments school-wide. Erika also became the Summer School Director, where they planned and directed daily schoolwide operations of a half-day academic summer program. Lastly, they were a Middle School English, Literature & Literacy Teacher, where they planned, taught and co-taught English and small-group language arts classes to middle school students with dyslexia.
Erika Lewis obtained a B.A. in English from Carleton College between 2002 and 2006. Erika then went on to receive an M.A. in Education from Mills College between 2014 and 2016.
