Senior Mechanical Engineer - SF (bh0025)

Engineering · Full-time · San Francisco, United States

Job description

About Charm

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.

Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!

We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.

Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!

About the Role

We’re looking for a seasoned Mechanical Engineer who can support our efforts towards scaling our condensing system as we scale our pyrolyzer throughput from 2 TPD to 10-15 tons per day. This role would interface heavily with our research team, which is actively building models to measure key parameters that will be held constant during a scale up. Scaling the condensing system will include putting together mockups for different design concepts, including building physical hardware in conjunction with our fabrication and electrical engineering teams. This role will also serve as a resource to other mechanical engineers on the team.  It wouldn’t be uncommon for another engineer to ask for a design review, or brainstorm actively with this person.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll serve as a senior engineering resource on the SF Pyrolysis team, which is currently responsible for the manufacturing of the current pyrolyzer as well as scaling up this pyrolyzers throughput by 5-7x
  • You will be responsible for designing pieces of the scaled up pyrolyzer, using data from literature and from hands-on testing
  • You will also contribute to testing our condensing system on site in San Francisco
  • You will be responsible for the design, build, and quick, efficient testing of mock ups of pieces of the scaled condenser
  • In building those mockups, you will interface cross-functionally with fabrication and electronics resources to see these designs through fruition
  • You will help deliver a scaled design of our pyrolyzer condensing system to a contract manufacturer, and validate the scaled design through additional testing
  • You will play an active role in shaping the scaling roadmap of our pyrolysis technology
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree required.

Requirements:

  • Seasoned Mechanical Engineering experience with at least 5+ years of experience
  • Experience with thermal, applied fluids, fluids handling, heat exchange experience
  • CAD knowledge is a must, we use Solidworks
  • Familiar with GD&T, familiar with basic fabrication techniques
  • Familiarity with electromechanical systems
  • Hands-on experience
  • Ability to communicate priorities and work cross functionally
  • An excitement for scaling up hardware that has the potential to positively impact climate change!

Bonus (but not required):

  • Chemical process equipment design experience
  • Managed/mentored junior engineers previously
