Russell Lewis

Executive Vice President and Chief Historian at Chicago History Museum

Russell Lewis has extensive work experience in the field of history and museum management.

Russell started their career in 1982 as an Assistant Editor at the Chicago History Museum. Over the years, they held various positions within the museum, including Associate Editor, Director of Publications and Editor, Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Assistant Director for Research and Curatorial Affairs.

In 1993, Lewis became the Andrew W. Mellon Director for Collections and Research, where they served until 2005. During this time, they also acted as Acting Co-President in 2000-2001 and Acting President in June-August 2005.

Lewis then took on the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Historian at the Chicago History Museum in 2005, a position they still hold. Russell is responsible for overseeing the museum's collections and research efforts.

In addition to their work at the Chicago History Museum, Lewis was also a Founding Board Member of Street-Level Youth Media from 1995 to 2016.

Russell Lewis completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology at the University of Florida from 1969 to 1973. Afterward, they pursued further education at the University of Michigan and obtained a Master of Arts degree in American Culture from 1975 to 1980.
