Thomas Ahern has a long and diverse work experience in various law enforcement agencies. Thomas started their career in 1980 as a State investigator for the State of Illinois Legislative Investigating Commission. From there, they worked as a Special Agent for the State of Illinois Department of Revenue Criminal Investigations Division until 1987. In 1987, Ahern joined the ATF as a Sr. Special Agent, Public Information Officer, and Crisis Negotiator. Thomas held this role for over 30 years, during which they managed public affairs training programs, wrote press releases and speeches, and served as the principal spokesman for ATF throughout Illinois. In 2018, Ahern was appointed as the Deputy Director of News Affairs and Communications for the Chicago Police Department.

Thomas Ahern obtained a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement and Sociology from Marquette University between 1976 and 1980. Thomas later pursued a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Public Administration and Social Service Professions from Roosevelt University, completing it between 1983 and 1985.
