Matthai Kuruvila Chakko

Matthai Kuruvila Chakko is an experienced journalist and public servant, currently serving as the Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Berkeley since July 2013. In this role, Matthai conducts analysis on citywide projects and policies while implementing communication strategies as the Public Information Officer. Previously, Matthai worked at the San Francisco Chronicle from 2006 to 2013, covering significant events in Oakland government and reporting on diverse topics such as religion and spirituality. Matthai's earlier experience includes roles at the San Jose Mercury News, where coverage ranged from consumer issues to local government dynamics, and serving as Shop Steward for the San Jose Newspaper Guild. Matthai holds a Master's degree in Journalism from UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
