Melanie S. Berks serves as the Senior Legislative Counsel in the Office of the Mayor for Intergovernmental Affairs in the City of Chicago, advocating for legislative interests and analyzing bills for their impact on municipal departments since March 2024. Prior experience includes nearly a decade as an Attorney Advisor for the Social Security Administration, where legal decisions were drafted, and training programs were developed for new employees. Melanie's volunteer work includes assisting clients at the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and serving as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Educational credentials encompass a Juris Doctor and two Master of Laws from the University of Illinois Chicago, complemented by a Bachelor’s degree in Economics/Communications from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
