Resilience Hub Project Coordinator at City of Minneapolis

Bharat Balyan, MPH, has a diverse work experience in public health and research. Bharat began their career as a Sophomore Guild Leader and Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Minnesota, where they analyzed the developmental effects of removing thalamic projections to interneurons using transgenic knockout mice. During this time, they also updated the lab database and notebook to communicate experiment results with the lab team.

Bharat then interned at the Pesticide Action Network North America, where they researched the human health effects of pesticide exposure, led outreach to organizations to raise awareness of pesticide exposure and negative health effects, and performed outreach to organizations to partner in reforming the food system.

Afterward, Bharat worked as an MN GreenCorps Member at the City of Minneapolis, where they engaged with employees to develop a pilot bike fleet project, collaborated with community-based organizations to increase physical activity in various communities, and expanded public housing urban gardening efforts.

Bharat subsequently joined the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency as a Student Worker and assisted with various tasks related to environmental health.

Bharat then joined Ramsey County as an Environmental Health Intern, where they developed a revamped Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and created an interactive Story Map using ArcGIS and infographics to illustrate the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.

Bharat later joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an ORISE Climate and Health Research Fellow and conducted research on climate and health. Bharat also worked as an ORISE Research Fellow, further contributing to climate and health research.

Most recently, Bharat joined the City of Minneapolis as a Resilience Hub Project Coordinator, where they are responsible for coordinating projects related to resilience in the city.

Bharat Balyan, MPH, earned their Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Environmental Health from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, completing the program between 2017 and 2019. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota, where they studied from 2013 to 2016.
