Gilbert Coleman has a diverse work experience. Gilbert started their career in 1987 as a Sales Representative at Colonial Penn Life Insurance, where they worked until 1991. In 2001, they joined the City of Philadelphia, first as a Program Director in the Mayor's Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity, and then in the Mayor's Office of Reintegration Services. In 2007, Gilbert started their own business called Gilbert Coleman Photography, where they work as the Owner and Photographer.

Gilbert Coleman earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in Industrial Relations/Organizational Behavior from the Fox School of Business at Temple University, where they studied from 1977 to 1981. Prior to that, they pursued an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Electronic Technology from the Community College of Philadelphia from 1974 to 1976. In addition to their formal education, Gilbert has obtained several certifications, including Capacity Building Certification from the National Responsible Fatherhood Capacity Building Initiative in 2009, Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) from the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc in 2007, and Master Trainer designations from the National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL) in 2006 and the National Fatherhood Initiative in 2005. Gilbert is also an Offender Workforce Development Specialist (OWDS) certified by the National Institute of Correction in 2005.
