John Harper

John Harper is an experienced clean power finance executive, advisor, and angel investor. John leads Birch Tree Capital, a financial consulting firm assisting project developers, investors, buyers, and other public and private entities on renewable power financing transactions.

John has over three decades of infrastructure project finance experience, and closed equity and debt financing for multiple utility and commercial-scale solar and wind projects. John has advised companies, towns, and other entities on solar power purchases. He was the lead author on a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report on wind project financing structures and advised the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on solar tax equity financing. He has advised, invested in, and closed venture equity and debt financing for multiple start-up clean power technology firms.

John is a managing director of the Carreden Group sourcing tax equity capital for utility-scale solar projects. He co-leads a distributed commercial solar project investment firm. John previously led power project financing teams for Tioga Energy, EDF Renewable Energy, Wärtsilä, and ABB. For the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, John closed financing for power generation, telecommunications, oil & gas, mining, and other infrastructure projects in over two dozen emerging market countries.

John holds FINRA Series 7 and 63 licenses, a M.A. in Law & Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a B.A. in Government from Pomona College. He co-chairs the Advisory Board for the Center for International Environment & Policy at the Fletcher School, and is an associate member of the Town of Wayland Energy & Climate Committee.
