Major Bowen, CPP has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Beginning in 1986, Major Bowen served in the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) until 2017. In 2005, they joined RTI International as a Senior Governance Specialist, where they spent two years in Iraq as a Regional Team Leader and Regional Operations Officer. During their time at RTI International, they focused on conflict mitigation and civil-military coordination. In 2011, Major Bowen joined the U.S. Department of State as a Lead Operations Officer, working primarily in Africa. Major was responsible for conflict mitigation, political violence, and counter violent extremism, and gained on-the-ground experience in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Lastly, in 2015, they became the Associate Vice President of Security Risk Management at Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA).

Major Bowen, CPP has a diverse education history. Major first attended Appalachian State University from 1993 to 1997, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice (BSCJ). Later, they pursued a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from North Carolina State University, which they completed between 2001 and 2005. In 2014, Major Bowen obtained a Graduate Certificate in Stability, Security, and Development in Complex Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School.

In addition to their academic achievements, Major Bowen has obtained several certifications. Major obtained the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification from ASIS International in October 2020. Major also holds certifications in Essentials of Security Risk Assessments (May 2022), ESRM Enterprise Security Risk Management (November 2021), and Essentials of Executive Protection Certificate Program (January 2023), all from ASIS International. Major Bowen is an active member of the ASIS Community Steering Committee.

Furthermore, Major Bowen has earned various badges from the US Army, including the Combat Action Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Major has completed the First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course from the American Red Cross and earned the Ranger Tab from the US Army Ranger Course.
