Kasturi Sengupta

Research Scientist at Code Bio

Kasturi Sengupta has a wealth of experience in research and teaching. In 2007, they began as a Research Fellow at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, where they focused on post transcriptional gene expression regulation in Leishmania and studied human UTRs in search of conserved motifs important for gene expression regulation. In 2015, they took on a Post-doctoral Fellow role at the Bose Institute, Centenary Campus, India. That same year, they became an Assistant Professor in Microbiology at Kingston College of Science, where they taught a 3-year Microbiology (Hons.) course and had expertise in virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and experimental lab trainings. In 2017, they became a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, where they studied utrophin gene expression regulation in muscle tissue and successfully showed a strategy of upregulating utrophin expression as a therapeutic strategy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in an animal model. Kasturi also worked with DMD patient derived iPSCs and implemented CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing for suppressing miRNA mediated repression of utrophin protein expression. In 2020, they became a Senior Research Investigator at the University of Pennsylvania's Gene Therapy Program. Most recently, they began as a Research Scientist at Code Biotherapeutics in 2022.

Kasturi Sengupta holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular Biology from the University of Calcutta, which they obtained in 2015. Prior to that, they completed their M.Sc in Microbiology at the University of Calcutta in 2007. Before that, Kasturi Sengupta obtained their B.Sc in Microbiology from A.P.C College in 2005. Additionally, in 2020 they obtained a certification in Data Science: R Basics from HarvardX - An Online Learning Initiative by Harvard University through edX.
