Irina completed their undergraduate studies in 1994. Following that, from 1994 to 1996, they pursued a master's degree in Cellular & Molecular Genetics at the same university. Irina then proceeded to pursue a PhD in Genetics and Immunology at Paris-Sud University (Paris XI) from 1996 to 2000.
