Joe Paetzold

Associate Principal & Engineering Manager at CPP Wind

Joe Paetzold is an engineering manager at CPP Wind. Joe has also worked as a PhD candidate at The University of Sydney and as a project engineer at Vitrociset (contracted to EADS Astrium Space Transportation).

Joe’s PhD project at The University of Sydney in the field of renewable energies and wind engineering analysed Concentrating Solar Power Parabolic Trough technology from a wind engineering perspective. The research identified an optimised shape and design of the parabolic reflector to keep wind load and thermal losses in the receiver tubes at the minimum. This enables a larger concentration ratio of the parabolic mirrors allowing for higher temperatures to be achieved in the solar field, and hence a higher efficiency. With an increased overall efficiency of the power plants, the cost of the generated electricity will be reduced.

At Vitrociset, Joe was employed at EADS Astrium Space Transportation (now Airbus Space) in the department of mission integration as part of the Industrial Operator of the European part of the International Space Station (ISS). Located close to our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), Joe coordinated and managed all scientific experiments on board of the ISS from the office in Leiden. In addition, they were the project manager of the integration phase (Payload Integration Manager) for several payloads for the ISS. In this role, they were responsible for the entire integration process of these payloads. This task required full overview of the entire project: they had to closely follow the payload development phase and to coordinate the integration and operations preparation phase with all involved parties (the project manager from the development stage, the project scientists, the operations centres, ESA, etc).

Joe Paetzold has a Ph.D. in Wind Engineering from the University of Sydney, a Master's Degree in Aerospace Systems Engineering from the University of the West of England, and a Diplom in Aircraft and Flight Engineering from Fachhochschule Osnabrueck.

They are on a team with Heather Sauder - Associate Principal, Peter Bourke - Global Chief Technical Officer & Managing Director, Sydney, and Jon Galsworthy - Managing Director, Canada. Joe Paetzold reports to Oliver Napp, CEO.
