Vice President & Chief Counsel at Crowley

Art Mead has over 25 years of work experience in various roles related to maritime law and operations. Art started their career as a Marine Operations Trainee at Maersk Line, Limited in 1988 and later worked as an Analyst in the Tanker Operations & Chartering Department at Stolt Tankers. In 1994, they served as a Legal Extern at the Torts Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, where they prepared legal memoranda on issues related to ship collision, pilotage, and vessel arrest. Mead also has over two decades of service as a Strategic Sealift Officer in the United States Navy Reserve, working in ship operations billets for the Navy's Military Sealift Command. Since 1996, they have been working at Crowley Maritime Corp., where they currently hold the position of Vice President & Chief Counsel. In this role, they are responsible for drafting and negotiating maritime contracts, conducting compliance research, managing political advocacy and lobbying activities, and advising management on shipping laws and regulations.

Art Mead attended Golden Gate University, School of Law from 1993 to 1995 and earned a J.D. degree in Law. Prior to that, they studied at the State University of New York Maritime College from 1985 to 1989, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with a focus on Marine Transportation. Before college, Art Mead attended Blair Academy from 1981 to 1985, completing their Traditional Boarding College Preparatory education. In terms of additional certifications, Art Mead obtained a Certified Legal Specialist in Admiralty and Maritime Law from the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization in 2012. Art also holds a Bar Admission in California from June 1996 and is Authorized House Counsel in Florida since July 2001. Additionally, Art Mead acquired an International Ship Chartering Broker certification from the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (U.S.A.) Inc. in May 1990. Lastly, they hold a Third Mate license from Oceans Unlimited, including endorsements for Radar Observer and Marine Fire Fighting. The license was originally obtained in May 1989 and has been renewed multiple times since then.
