Curator Of Musical Instruments at Curtis Institute of Music

Philip Kass is a highly experienced curator and appraiser specializing in fine stringed instruments. Since September 2006, Philip Kass has served as the Curator of Musical Instruments at The Curtis Institute of Music, providing expertise on stringed instruments while also teaching a class on the violin. As an independent appraiser and consultant since August 2002, Philip Kass has focused on fine stringed instruments and bows, holding certification from the Appraisers Association of America. Philip Kass has contributed articles to The Strad since 1995 and has a history of involvement in the violin trade dating back to 1976. Notably, Philip Kass served on the board of the Violin Society of America from 1975 to 2010, including roles as Vice-President and President. Previous experience at William Moennig & Son, Ltd. from 1977 to 2002 involved responsibilities in sales, acquisitions, appraisals, and certification of fine instruments. Philip Kass holds a BA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, obtained between 1974 and 1976.
