Gian Luigi Canata has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of sports traumatology and medicine. Gian Luigi began their career in 1980 as the Director of Medical Services at CUS Torino. Gian Luigi later took on the role of Vice President at CUS Torino in 2015. Alongside their work at CUS Torino, Canata held various positions within different medical organizations. Gian Luigi served as a Member of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Committee and a Board of Directors Member at Large for ISAKOS. Gian Luigi was also the Past Chairman of ESMA for ESSKA. Canata was involved with SIGASCOT as the President of the Sports Medicine Committee and played a key role in EFOST as the General Secretary and Executive Board Member. In academia, Canata worked as a Professor of Sports Medicine at SUISM University of Torino and as a Professor of Kinesiology at ISEF Torino. Gian Luigi also held leadership positions in the Winter Universiade Torino 2007 as the Director of the Medical Commission.

Gian Luigi Canata has an extensive education history. Gian Luigi first attended the Università degli Studi di Torino from 1973 to 1979, where they obtained an MD degree in Medicine with honors. During their time at the university, they also achieved the title of Italian University Triple Jump Champion for three years consecutively - 1975, 1976, and 1978.

Following this, in 1979, Canata obtained the ECFMG Certification from ECFMG. Gian Luigi then returned to the Università degli Studi di Torino and pursued further studies in Orthopaedics and Traumatology from 1980 to 1982.
