Gráinne Hawkes is a legal professional with extensive experience in data protection and European law. Currently serving as Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner at the Data Protection Commission Ireland since October 2019, Gráinne has previously held a position in the Cabinet of Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders at the European Commission. Gráinne's background includes work as an associate in Dispute Resolution at Linklaters and as a legal volunteer in Lesvos, supporting asylum applicants. Gráinne has also gained significant experience through internships with the United States Congress, UEFA legal counsel, and various legal firms in Dublin, focusing on competition law and tax. Gráinne holds multiple advanced degrees in law, including a Master’s Degree in European Law and an Advanced Higher Diploma in Data Protection Law.

The Data Protection Commission is Ireland’s independent supervisory authority tasked with upholding individual data protection rights and regulating the data processing activities of the organisations operating within our jurisdiction. The DPC is the Irish supervisory authority responsible for monitoring the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and we also have functions and powers related to other regulatory frameworks, including the Irish ePrivacy Regulations (2011) and the EU Directive known as the Law Enforcement Directive (LED).
