Alexandra Claudia Mateescu

Researcher, Labor Futures Initiative at Data & Society Research Institute

Alexandra Claudia Mateescu has been working in the research field since 2011. Alexandra Claudia began their career as a Research Assistant at Columbia University's American Cities Survey Project, where they participated in survey data collection and in-person interviews. In 2013, they worked as a Development Intern at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. Since 2014, they have been a Researcher at the Data & Society Research Institute's Labor Futures Initiative. In this role, they have conducted qualitative, fieldwork-based research, done policy and media engagement, and worked with labor advocates and other organizations to inform research on the ways technology and digital surveillance are impacting worker rights and worker power in the U.S. Her career highlights include conducting studies on the erosion of worker protections across the gig economy and domestic work, automation in retail and agricultural labor, the impacts of digital surveillance of Medicaid recipients and home health care workers, and post-Covid impacts on gig workers. Additionally, they have written event materials and assisted with event sessions for the Data & Civil Rights conferences.

Alexandra Claudia Mateescu attended Bard College from 2007 to 2008, where they studied Cultural Anthropology. Alexandra Claudia then transferred to the University of Chicago in 2008 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology in 2011. Alexandra Claudia continued their studies at the University of Chicago and earned a Master's Degree in Cultural Anthropology (Master of Arts Program Social Sciences) in 2013.
