Gilberto García Vazquez has held a variety of roles in the public and private sectors. From 2000 to 2003, they were an Associate Professor at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas A.C., where they led the Local Government Innovation Award and published case studies on innovation and sustainability. From 2003 to 2007, they were a Research Fellow at the Harvard Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, researching and lecturing about the impact of innovation on democratic governance. From 2007 to 2010, they were an Advisor to the CEO on Sustainable Development/ESG at PEMEX, where they shaped grants to oil communities and worked on the company's first Sustainability Report. From 2010 to 2013, they were the Energy Government Affairs and Policy Leader - Latin America at GE, where they anticipated regulatory trends and organized strategies to promote smart grid in multiple countries. From 2013 to 2014, they were the Governance Director, Latin America at DAI, where they built a new P&L and led a team developing solutions on local government management. From 2014 to 2018, they were the General Manager and Technology and Operations Director at PointVerde, where they managed a venture-backed energy services startup and secured US$8M project financing from the Inter American Development Bank green bond. From 2018 to 2019, they were the Foreign Direct Investment General Director at the Secretariat of Economy, where they designed a data-driven strategy for targeting foreign direct investment and trade diversification and led the development of an award-winning platform. From 2019 to present, they have been a Consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank, advising a national regulatory agency on designing a platform to help small businesses make better decisions, as well as writing a policy paper promoting smart regulation. Gilberto is currently the Chief Economist at Datawheel, conducting economic complexity analysis, coordinating the development of data platforms, and creating content to communicate insights from data.
Gilberto García Vazquez began their educational journey in 1993 when they obtained their BA in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. Gilberto then went on to obtain a Master in Public Policy from the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas A.C. in 2000. Finally, they pursued a PhD Candidate in Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University from 2004 to 2007.
