Assistant Superintendent & Managing Director of New York at Democracy Prep Public Schools

Duncan Scherer is the current Assistant Superintendent & Managing Director of New York at Democracy Prep Public Schools. Duncan has been with Democracy Prep since June 2011, where they started as a Leader U Fellow. In this role, they advanced the development of teachers via experiential training as a leadership coach. Duncan elevated their personal skill set with coaching through Building Excellent Schools and observing highly performing schools to gain invaluable insights regarding leadership values, coaching techniques, and student culture building.

Before their time at Democracy Prep, Duncan was a Teacher/Corps Member at Teach For America from June 2011-June 2013. While there, they increased Math and ELA proficiency by 10% compared to 7th grade achievement levels, in conjunction with improved student reading levels by 2 years at end of their 8th grade year and received the nomination for the Teach for America, Sue Lehmann Award for Excellence in Teaching (2013). Prior to Teach For America, Duncan was a Program Director at CFES Brilliant Pathways from August 2007-June 2011 and a Career Specialist at Boston Private Industry Council from August 2006-July 2008. Duncan began their career as an Americorps Member at College Possible from August 2005-June 2006.

Duncan Scherer has a Master of Science from Hunter College in the field of Education/Teaching of Individuals in Secondary Special Education Programs. Duncan also has a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College in Duncan'story.

They are on a team with Margaret Marrer - Senior Director of K-12 Curriculum and Assessment, Tanya Nunez - Assistant Superintendent, and Yulenny Grullon - Academic and Events Coordinator. and Ellie Grose - Senior Director of Special Education and English Language Services reports to Duncan Scherer.
