Matthew James

Chief Deputy District Attorney at Denver District Attorney's Office

Matthew James has a strong background in the legal field. Matthew currently serves as the Chief Deputy District Attorney at the Denver District Attorney's Office, overseeing a team and focusing on prosecuting serious felony offenses. Previously, they worked as a Deputy District Attorney in the Family Violence Unit for the same office, primarily handling domestic violence offenses and crimes against children. Prior to joining the Denver District Attorney's Office, Matthew worked as a Deputy District Attorney for the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office, where they focused on prosecuting domestic violence and serious traffic offenses. Matthew also has experience working as an Associate Attorney at Faraci Leasure LLC, representing clients in commercial litigation disputes. Matthew began their legal career as a Deputy District Attorney for the Colorado's 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office, where they handled various felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases, including successfully prosecuting several trials and defending cases in appellate proceedings. Matthew also gained political experience as an assistant to Denver City Councilman Michael Hancock in their race for Denver Mayor and as a coalition organizer for Coloradans for Responsible Reform in the 2010 election cycle. Additionally, Matthew has interned for campaigns and government offices, including Hickenlooper for Colorado, U.S. Senator Mark Udall, and Ritter for Governor. Prior to law school, they were a summer associate at Underhill & Underhill, P.C., where they performed legal research and assisted with various legal tasks.

Matthew James began their education at Field High School from 1996 to 2000. Matthew then attended Cornell University from 2000 to 2004, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Matthew further pursued their education at Georgetown University Law Center from 2006 to 2009, earning a Juris Doctor degree. Additionally, they obtained the Colorado Bar certification in October 2009 from The Supreme Court of the State of Colorado.
