The Sketchvis Artist role

A Sketchvis Artist accurately translates the vision of the director, converts written scripts into a series of 2D images and creates a visual representation of the animation's narrative. As a key visual storyteller he sets out the look, timings, camera angles, and points of view of the sequences, sketching out images for the client from verbal descriptions or by referencing scenes.

Key responsibilities for the Sketchvis Artist

  • Break down and convert the show’s written script into a series of 2D images.

  • Applying animation and illustration skills and using various tools and softwares.

  • Accurately translate the vision of the director and interpreting the client’s ideas into detailed hand or computer drawings.

  • Sequence the scenes from a script into storyboard format using panels of images.

  • Applying various genres or styles if required and amend storyboard scenes during the course of production and within the set deadline.

  • Set out the look, timings, camera angles and points of view of the sequences, identify lighting requirements.

  • Liaising with the client’s supervision and production team regarding the look, style, level of detail required for the storyboard as well as the output and final delivery format (linework, quick thumbnails, video format, animatics, painterly cinematic and a mix of 2D/3D).

Essential requirements for the Sketchvis Artist

  • Excellent hand and computer drawing skills: ability to produce artwork in a range of styles.

  • Knowledge of animation and good understanding of layout, composition, sequential drawing and editing as well as a strong understanding of framing and cinematography techniques.

  • Solid storytelling skills: ability to communicate well a narrative.

  • 2D Animation course and/or a degree in fine art, illustration, film or animation is an advantage, but not a requirement.

  • Knowledge of a combination of the following software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere pro, Toon Boom Harmony.

Desirable experience

  • 5+ years experience as a Sketchvis / Storyboard artist in film, television, advertising, the animation industry, video gaming, and all forms of moving media.
