Silvia Giannini, Ph.D.

Director of Biology at Disc Medicine

Silvia Giannini, Ph.D. has a rich and diverse work experience in the field of biology and hematology research.

Silvia is currently the Director of Biology at Disc Medicine, a position they have held since December 2022. Prior to that, they worked as an Associate Director of Biology at Agios Pharmaceuticals from August 2021 to December 2022.

From August 2020 to August 2021, Giannini worked at Platelet BioGenesis as a Principal Scientist. Their work focused on the development of iPSC-derived platelet-like cells for treating bleeding, autoimmune, and malignant disorders. Silvia also led the in vivo pharmacology team and designed and executed various studies to test lead drug candidates.

Before joining Platelet BioGenesis, Giannini worked as a Senior Scientist at the same company from July 2019 to August 2020.

Giannini's early career includes significant roles at Harvard Medical School. Silvia served as an Assistant Professor from July 2018 to July 2019, where they led a laboratory focused on evaluating the potential application of glycan modifications to regulate hematopoiesis in hematologic conditions. Silvia also worked as an Instructor of Medicine from February 2015 to June 2018, focusing on understanding glycan-mediated mechanisms controlling blood cell production.

Prior to their work at Harvard Medical School, Giannini was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the hospital from June 2010 to January 2015, working within Dr. Karin Hoffmeister and Dr. Hervé Falet's laboratories. Their research primarily focused on understanding the mechanisms of platelet production and clearance.

Giannini's early experience includes a role as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Perugia from 2005 to 2009. Their work at the university involved studying platelet activation mechanisms and their contribution to ischemic cardiovascular disease.

Throughout their career, Giannini has published multiple papers and has received prestigious awards for their contributions to the field of hematology research.

Silvia Giannini, Ph.D.'s education history includes a Master of Science (MS) degree in Biological Sciences from Università degli Studi di Perugia. Silvia completed this degree in an unspecified year prior to 2001. Silvia then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biology and Molecular Biotechnology from the same university, which they obtained between the years 2001 to 2006.
