Primary Role:

The PACU – Recovery Room Nurse will provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the center of all that we do.  The qualified nurse will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating their own nursing care provided to adults, children and their families in the pre and post-operative course. The PACU – Recovery Room Nurse adheres to Doctors Hospital policy/procedure in their duties and to their signed contract with regard to the scheduling needs and can be expected to work in both the inpatient and outpatient areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Participating as a Recovery Room Nurse, providing physical and psychological care to immediate post-operative patients inclusive of pediatric, adults, and geriatric patients.
  • Direct and be accountable for the nursing care of patients in the pediatric and adult recovery unit.
  • Work within professional guidelines as laid down by The Cayman Islands Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Carry out all Recovery Room Nursing practice in accordance with the CTMH DH Theatre and Recovery Room Policies; including the care, control and administration of medicines.
  • Identifies actual and potential risk to patients and others and takes action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety.
  • Review patient charts for health history and to assure that the necessary pre-operative evaluations have been completed. Make sure permission for surgery has been given and the patient is consented for surgery.
  • Flexibility to work across both disciplines within recovery, i.e. adults and pediatrics.
  • Have a commitment to professional organizations relating to the care of the child and their parent/guardian on their journey through the pediatric recovery unit.
  • Maintain accurate nursing records and recovery records as per hospital policy.
  • Maintaining a safe environment within the department for both staff and patients; keep up to date with health and safety regulations. Follows facility and OSHA safety rules.
  • Ensure the principles and practices of risk management are adhered to in the recovery unit environment and relevant healthcare setting.
  • Will complete all necessary documentation on Recovery Room nurses’ record.
  • Collaborates and works cooperatively with physicians and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team in formal and informal teaching of patients and/or family about his or her disease process and wellness promotion plan and discharge planning.
  • Ensure the availability and maintenance of the equipment necessary for the delivery of optimum standards of patient care within the recovery unit.
  • Maintain and update own knowledge continuously, seeking out learning opportunities and participating in ongoing education.
  • Foster a learning environment for the benefit of staff in the Theatre and Recovery Room.
  • Assist less experienced staff to develop their skills in Recovery Room Nursing.
  • Deputize for the Clinical Coordinator in her absence.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with roster to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
  • Discuss any problems or potential problems with the Clinical Coordinator or Nurse in Charge.
  • Such other duties appropriate to the post may be assigned from time to time, by the hospital authority through the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Keep up to date with mandatory training such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Qualifications / Knowledge Requirements:

  • Degree from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent/relevant Recovery Room experience (Intensive Care or Emergency Room experience is desired) (current within last six months).
  • Recovery experience and Post Graduate theatre course desirable but not essential.
  • CPR and ACLS accreditation.
  • Demonstrate experience in mentorship/preceptorship.
  • Have a strong commitment to pre and post registration nurse education.
  • Demonstrate the practice of teaching in the clinical area.
  • Display evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate working well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must be a critical thinker.
  • Cool tempered with emotional and physical stamina.
  • Computer skills essential.

Accountability:

The PACU/Recovery Room Registered Nurse will be accountable to the Clinical Coordinator – Operating Room. with secondary reporting lines to the Chief Nurse.
