Kelly P. Mayo

Deputy Inspector General for Investigations & Director of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service at Department of Defense Office of Inspector General

Mr. Kelly P. Mayo was designated Acting Director of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) on January 23, 2021. In that capacity, Mr. Mayo is the principal advisor to the Acting Principal Deputy Inspector General and Acting Inspector General. Mr. Mayo was promoted to the position of Principal Deputy Director on October 15, 2017 after his appointment to the Senior Executive Service on March 21, 2016, where he initially served as the Assistant Inspector General for Investigations.

Prior to his service to the DoD IG, Mr. Mayo served 33 years with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. During his tenure with AFOSI, he held numerous positions of progressive responsibility, beginning his career as a field agent in southern California investigating violent crime. He commanded two AFOSI Field Offices—in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and at the United States Air Force Academy. He was the Procurement Fraud Program Manager for New England, the Director of Counterintelligence for AFOSI Field Investigations Region 8, servicing Air Force Space Command as well the Director of Operations for that region. Mr. Mayo deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in 2005 where he assumed the duties as Chief of a Protective Service Detail. In 2007, Mr. Mayo became the Deputy Director of Staff at HQ AFOSI, and shortly thereafter the Deputy Director of AFOSI Field Investigations Region 7. He subsequently served as the Special Assistant to the AFOSI Executive Director. Mr. Mayo finished his AFOSI career as the Deputy Director, AFOSI Office of Special Projects. In that capacity, he served as the Deputy Security Director for Air Force Special Access Programs.

Mr. Mayo received his B.A. from the University of the State of New York at Albany and his M.A. from The George Washington University Mr. Mayo is also a graduate of Air University, Air War College. In 2011, he was named a Senior Fellow, after completing the Partnership for Public Service, Excellence in Government Fellows Program. In 2018, Mr. Mayo attended Harvard’s Kennedy School “Driving Government Performance” certificate program.

Mr. Mayo is the recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Joint Civilian Service Commendation Medal.
