Jason Kennedy

Captain Jason Kennedy is a 29-year member of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Currently, he is the Professional Standards Division Commander.

He started his career with Douglas County as a Detentions Deputy, where he served in the former jail facility (formally located at 355 S. Wilcox Street in Castle Rock). He was then assigned to the Patrol Division. He was transferred to the Investigations Division in 1996 and shortly after that, promoted to Corporal. While serving in Investigations as a Corporal, he investigated several homicides and served as an Intelligence Investigator. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1999 and spent a short time as a Patrol Sergeant before being transferred back to the Investigations Division as a Sergeant. In 2003 he was promoted to Lieutenant and put in command of the Special Investigations Section (SIS).

In 2005 he was appointed as the Commander of the South Metro Drug Task Force. He served in this capacity until 2008 when he returned to the Sheriff’s Office as the Commander of the Office of Professional Standards. He reported to the Sheriff and was responsible for Internal Affairs, Hiring, Training, Human Resources, and Accreditation.

On August 2, 2010, he was promoted to Captain and transferred to the Detentions Division. In Detentions, he was responsible for the entire jail facility, court operations, and transports. During his tenure as the Detentions Captain, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was awarded its first-ever American Correctional Association (ACA) Accreditation award and the second National Correctional Health Care Certification (NCHCC) award.

Captain Kennedy was also instrumental with the new space and needs assessment for the Justice Center, which resulted in the design of the current facility. The improvements include increased efficiencies in booking and other areas, ADA retrofitting, and a focus on needs involving inmates with mental illness and injuries.

In 2013, Captain Kennedy became the Commander for the Investigations Division. Investigative work is one of his true passions, and he enjoyed serving as the Commander.

Captain Kennedy attend the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy (FBI NA) in March of 2016. Attending the FBI NA was an incredible opportunity that he continues to be humbled by the knowledge, dedication, and sacrifice of those who participated in with him from around the Nation as well as the many international peers.

Captain Kennedy has served on the Arapahoe County Community Corrections Board and was on the Board of Director for Arapahoe Douglas Mental Health Network for many years.

For about three years Captain Kennedy was the Deputy Director of Human Relations (HR) for Douglas County Government. This internal transfer to HR gave him an incredible opportunity to better understand and work with all the different County job functions while continuing to be an active part of the Sheriff’s Office. As the Deputy Director, he was exposed to the workplace outside of law enforcement and absorbed a great deal during his time in HR. In 2019, Captain Kennedy returned to the Sheriff’s Office with this experience and went straight into the Office of Professional Standards where he has applied this additional knowledge, network, and understanding to his current role in the Sheriff’s Office.
