Charles obtained a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Soil Mechanics (Honours) from the Potchefstroom University, South Africa. He also holds a Graduate Diploma of Engineering (Civil) from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Charles has over 20 years experience in soil and rock mechanics. He has supervised numerous major projects including; waste dumps and slurry dams, slope stability of deep excavations, and coal mine in-seam and inter-seam support design. He was the Rock Mechanics Officer at Vaal Reefs and involved with pillar design and on and off-reef support design.

Currently, he is involved in reviewing ground support for Redpath Mining at Mt Lyell Tasmania and the Cobar deep shaft between 1000m and 1500m depths. He also provided advice on deep excavations of rock in the GPO Building, Sydney Central Plaza and The Cove apartments in the Sydney area.
