Spatial Ecologist at Earthshot Labs

Joe Hughes has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Joe is currently working as a Spatial Ecologist at Earthshot Labs since April 2022. Prior to this, Joe worked as a Spatial Ecologist Consultant from February 2020 to April 2022. Before their consultancy role, Joe worked as a Research Associate Professor at Oregon State University from April 2015 to January 2020. Joe also served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Boston University from August 2014 to April 2015, where they developed an automated workflow for labeling causal agents of forest disturbances. Joe's work experience also includes being a SCALE-IT Fellow & Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Tennessee from August 2009 to August 2014. During this time, they focused on quantifying forest disturbances on continental scales to inform models of global climate change. Additionally, Joe has experience as a Web Developer / Database Administrator at The Herald Dispatch from March 2006 to May 2009, where they developed data-driven web applications to support news and editorial content. Joe started their career as a Project Manager at Vandalia Research, Inc. from December 2005 to January 2007, leading a team to develop forensic science education kits.

Joe Hughes completed their education history with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Integrated Science and Technology from Marshall University, where they studied from 1999 to 2003. Joe then pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Geobiophysical Modeling/Mathematics from Marshall University from 2003 to 2005. Joe continued their academic journey by enrolling at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from 2009 to 2014.
