James Hourston

Lead Research Scientist in Biological Efficacy at Eden Research

James Hourston has extensive experience in the field of entomology and research. James is currently working as a Lead Research Scientist in Biological Efficacy at Eden Research plc since March 2022. Prior to this, they were a Senior Research Scientist in Biological Efficacy at the same company from March 2021 to March 2022.

Before joining Eden Research plc, James worked as a Research Entomologist and Trial Manager at arctec, LSHTM from January 2020 to February 2021. In this role, they conducted trials on insecticides, repellents, and novel pest control technologies.

From 2015 to 2019, James worked at Royal Holloway, University of London as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant. Their research focused on seed technology, seed ecology (seed-microbe interactions), and seed ecophysics.

In 2012, James worked as an Entomological Consultant at James Hourston Entomology. Prior to that, they worked at British Flora as a Plant Technician and Ecological Assistant, where they cared for nursery stocks of native UK plants and assisted in green engineering and restoration projects.

James also gained experience at the Natural History Museum as a Front of House staff member from June 2009 to January 2011. James also conducted their MSc research project as a Postgrad Student at CABI, where they surveyed and investigated insect herbivores on Beech trees in the Swiss Jura region.

James Hourston completed their education with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Ecology from Royal Holloway, University of London. James pursued this degree from 2011 to 2015 as part of the NERC CASE Studentship program. Prior to that, James received a Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Entomology from Imperial College London for the academic year 2009-2010. James began their undergraduate studies by obtaining a Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) in Zoology from the University of Derby, where they completed their degree from 2006 to 2009.
