Ben Barthel

Principal Scientist, Biochemistry at Edgewise Therapeutics

Ben Barthel has a diverse range of work experience in the field of biochemistry and chemistry. Ben worked at Edgewise Therapeutics, starting as a Scientist I in biochemistry in August 2018 and progressing to become a Scientist II in May 2021. In August 2022, they assumed the role of Principal Scientist, focusing on biochemistry.

Prior to joining Edgewise Therapeutics, Ben was self-employed and worked as an independent consultant/contractor at the same company. During this time, they played a crucial role in establishing and consolidating the biochemistry program. Ben designed and optimized assays for efficient screening of large numbers of drug candidate compounds, enabling the company to bring the screening internally and improve data quality and reproducibility.

Before their self-employment, Ben worked as a Chemistry Tutor from August 2017 to May 2018. Their tutoring expertise likely supported students in their chemistry studies.

Ben also gained research experience at the University of Colorado Boulder. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate from March 2016 to August 2017, they collaborated with Dr. Ted Randolph and Sanofi Pasteur on a sponsored research program focusing on the structural analysis of poliovirus vaccines. Ben developed and executed experiments to identify mechanisms of degradation when the cold-chain was disrupted and established an in-house assay for the structural integrity of poliovirus particles.

From January 2009 to March 2016, Ben worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant, contributing to the development and characterization of prodrugs of doxazolidine, an anticancer agent. Their research involved designing and executing experiments to prove the mechanism of doxazolidine formation and synthesizing and characterizing prodrug candidates.

Overall, Ben Barthel has a strong background in biochemistry and has made significant contributions to assay development, drug screening, structural analysis, and prodrug research throughout their career.

Ben Barthel completed their PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder from 2004 to 2008.
