John Maidens

John Maidens has a strong background in machine learning and data science. John started their career at Eko in 2017 as a Data Scientist, where they were responsible for building Eko's machine learning-based heart sounds and ECG analysis service. During their time at Eko, they supported the full product lifecycle and successfully shipped two 510(k) cleared machine learning-based software as a medical device products. John trained and optimized deep neural networks using Keras/TensorFlow for automatic segmentation and classification of physiological signals. In 2022, John joined Apple as a Machine Learning Engineer, working on machine learning projects. Currently, they are serving as the Machine Learning Lead at Eight Sleep since 2023.

John Maidens has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Alberta, which they obtained from 2006 to 2010. John later pursued a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at The University of British Columbia from 2010 to 2012. Finally, they completed their education at the University of California, Berkeley, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from 2012 to 2017.
