Board Of Directors Member-at-large at Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL)

Laurie Chong, Ph.D., currently serves as the Director of External Relations at the Molecular Foundry, Berkeley Lab, overseeing strategic initiatives, communications programs, and policy development. With a background that includes roles as a Senior Communications & Outreach Specialist and Marketing and Communications Specialist at the Molecular Foundry, Laurie has focused on publicizing research and engaging with various audiences. As a member of the Board of Directors for Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally, Laurie also contributes as Vice Chair and Communications Director, promoting organization initiatives. Previous experience includes a fellowship in the Office of Congressman Mike Honda, teaching marine science, and extensive research during graduate studies at the University of Southern California and UC San Diego. Laurie holds a PhD in Geological Science and a BS in Biochemistry/Chemistry.

Founded by engineers and scientists experienced in public policy, ESAL serves as a platform for bridging technical expertise with community needs. Operating as a non-partisan and non-advocacy group, we facilitate informed dialogue, encourage innovative problem-solving, and support the integration of scientific insights into local decision-making processes.
