Dr. Ann Smith CEnv FIEMA EHF is an accomplished environmental management professional with extensive experience in sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions. Currently serving as Chair of the Validation Council at the Science Based Targets initiative and as a consultant through Ann Smith Limited, Dr. Smith has provided consultancy services to various organizations, including the Ministry for the Environment and Carbon & Energy Professionals. With a strong background in standards development as the Convenor of the Standards New Zealand ISO/TC207/SC7 International Review Group, Dr. Smith has contributed to international standards for environmental practices. Previous roles include CEO of Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, where oversight of carbon certification schemes was a primary focus, and a long tenure at the University of Hertfordshire, culminating in a professorship in Environmental Management for Business. Dr. Smith holds a PhD in Marine Biology from the University of London and a BSc(Hons) in Botany and Psychology from the University of Adelaide.

EnviroStrat blends scientific capability and commercial experience to originate, develop, raise capital and execute impact-focused natural resource sector projects that deliver measurable environmental and social improvements and positive financial returns. Significant global interest is emerging for nature-based solutions that combine multiple outcomes, including climate resilience, biodiversity, and water quality improvements, that can also generate positive economic and financial returns on investment. Globally there are few entities that are moving beyond rhetoric to action, through connecting the world of sustainable finance and project development in a way that aligns the needs and expectations of the investment community with environmentally impactful projects. Our reputation as an innovator in creating and adapting solutions to complex, long-standing natural resource challenges has seen EnviroStrat provide advisory services to government agencies, non-profit organisations, indigenous communities, and multilateral banks in New Zealand and around the world. We have led several 'first in New Zealand' projects, including: pioneering regenerative ocean farming; piloting a natural capital ‘chart of accounts’ for fresh water management in Hawkes Bay; landscape scale impact investment analysis; seafood sector impact investment feasibility analysis; a restoration plan for New Zealand’s largest catchment; a region-wide green growth strategy; and research into regenerative economies. Increasingly we have been involved in international projects, including in India, USA, Vietnam, and PNG. Recognising the opportunities associated with aquaculture in NZ, EnviroStrat acquired a 50% share of Aquaculture Direct in 2019.
