Alexander Hertel-Fernandez

Alexander Hertel-Fernandez is currently an Associate Professor of International and Public Affairs and Vice Dean for Curriculum and Instruction at Columbia University, focusing on the political economy of the United States, particularly in the areas of business, labor, and policymaking. As a Visiting Fellow at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, Alexander engages in research and policy on labor and social policy. Previous roles include leading initiatives at the Office of Management and Budget to enhance public engagement in regulatory processes and serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Evaluation at the U.S. Department of Labor, where efforts centered on equity, unemployment insurance, and worker rights. Alexander holds a PhD and AM in Government and Social Policy from Harvard University, along with a BA in Political Science and Global Public Health from Northwestern University.
