Spence Hutchinson

Staff Threat Intelligence Researcher at eSentire

Spence Hutchinson has a strong background in threat intelligence and security analysis. Spence began their career in 2013 as a Security Analyst at the Ministry of Natural Resources, where they worked as a Co-Op Student for four months. During this time, they helped ensure compliance with government security policies and developed documentation to support project managers.

In 2014, Spence transitioned to a role as a Senior SOC Analyst at eSentire, where they monitored client networks for security incidents and communicated incidents to clients for remediation. Spence held this position for eight months before being promoted to SOC Technical Team Lead in 2015. In this role, they prioritized investigations, trained and mentored analysts, and defined investigation processes to ensure consistency and quality.

Spence continued to progress within eSentire and became a SOC Training Developer in 2016. In this role, they were responsible for maintaining content review cycles, designing eLearning materials, and publishing course materials. Spence then became a Team Lead in Threat Intelligence in 2017, where they oversaw a team and managed threat intelligence operations. After a year, they were promoted to Manager of Threat Intelligence in 2018, where they led and coordinated threat intelligence efforts.

In 2021, Spence took on the role of Senior Threat Researcher, contributing to eSentire's threat intelligence research. Spence most recently became a Staff Threat Intelligence Researcher in 2022, where their responsibilities include conducting in-depth research and analysis to identify emerging threats.

Spence Hutchinson attended Sir Sandford Fleming College from 2010 to 2013, where they obtained an Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Computer Security and Investigations. In addition to their diploma, Spence also holds two certifications. Spence obtained the GIAC Continuous Monitoring Certification (GMON) from GIAC in November 2016. Most recently, in January 2022, they acquired the GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) certification from GIAC Certifications.
