The President bears the legal and political responsibility for the university and is accountable to the ETH Board for management.

He chairs the school board and coordinates its activities; the other members of the Executive Board report to him. In agreement with the other members of the Executive Board and based on the strategic planning of the ETH Board and the strategic planning of the ETH, he defines the strategy. In addition, the President decides on the budget, allocates the funds to the respective school management areas and departments and regulates the financial competencies for the entire university.

It prepares the appointment of professors and appoints, among other things, the heads of departments at the request of the department conferences. He represents the university to the outside world; he maintains relationships with authorities, political authorities and the general public and is responsible for information policy. He controls the internationalization process and the development of strategic alliances. His responsibilities also include fundraising and alumni relations.
