Julien Chimot

Atmospheric Composition Remote Sensing Scientist - Copernicus/eumetsat Operational Sentinel-3 at EUMETSAT

Julien Chimot has over 10 years of work experience in the field of Earth observation and remote sensing. Julien is currently employed at EUMETSAT as an Atmospheric Composition Remote Sensing scientist, working on the operational Sentinel-3 atmospheric processors for Copernicus and EUMETSAT member states. Their role includes evolving algorithm specifications and operational development for enhanced quality of the Copernicus S3 Aerosol & Fire Near Real Time (NRT) products.

Prior to this, Julien worked as a Research fellow at the Department of Geoscience & Remote Sensing Research Group of TU Delft. Their research focused on global mapping of atmospheric composition, specifically retrieving aerosol height and tropospheric NO2 from the OMI satellite. Julien developed novel retrieval algorithms, conducted inter-comparisons with other datasets, and improved the aerosol correction within the OMI tropospheric NO2 retrieval. Julien also published several peer-review papers in reputable scientific journals and was involved in proposal writing for the Dutch funding agency.

Julien also gained valuable experience at NOVELTIS, where they worked as an Atmosphere Level 2 Unit coordinator, project manager, and R&D engineer. Additionally, they had internships at NOVELTIS and CESBIO, where they gained practical experience in atmospheric physics and chemistry.

Overall, Julien Chimot has a strong background in atmospheric composition remote sensing and has contributed to the development and improvement of operational satellite products.

Julien Chimot has an academic background in environmental management and monitoring. Julien completed their Master's degree in the second year of a professional program at Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III in 2008. Prior to that, they pursued a Master's degree in the first year of Sciences of the Atmosphere and Oceanography at the same university from 2006 to 2007.

Before entering the Master's programs, Chimot earned a Bachelor's degree in Fundamental and Optical Physics from Université de Bordeaux, where they studied from 2003 to 2006. Julien completed their secondary education at Lycee Saint Elme in 2003 with a Science degree and honors.

In terms of further education and training, Chimot attended Les Glenans in 2010, although details of the program or qualification obtained are not provided. Julien also participated in the Earth Observation Summer School at ESA/ESRIN in 2014, focusing on Earth system monitoring and modeling. In the same year, they completed an online training program called "Monitoring Climate from Space" offered by ESA and Future Learn, which explored the role of Earth Observation satellite technology.

Most recently, Chimot pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at Delft University of Technology, specializing in Atmospheric Composition from Space - Retrieving Aerosol Height and Tropospheric NO2 from OMI. The start year of this program is not specified, but it is mentioned that they completed their PhD in 2018.
