Paolo Ruti

Chief Scientist at EUMETSAT

Paolo Ruti has extensive work experience in the field of meteorology and climate research. Paolo is currently the Chief Scientist at EUMETSAT since October 2020. Prior to that, from 2014 to 2020, they held several roles at the World Meteorological Organization, including being the Head of the WMO Weather Research and the Chief of the World Weather Division. In these roles, they were responsible for various areas of weather research and played a key role in programs related to polar prediction, sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasting, data assimilation, and verification, among others.

Before joining the World Meteorological Organization, Paolo Ruti served as the Vice-Chair of the European Climate Research Alliance from 2012 to 2014. Paolo also worked at ENEA from 2010 to 2014, where they led a section focused on climate modelling and impacts. At ENEA, they managed a team of 17 staff members and was involved in projects related to climate change, energy, food security, agriculture, and ecosystems.

In addition, Paolo Ruti served as the Coordinator of the first European project on climate services under the European Commission 7th Research Framework Program from 2011 to 2014. Paolo was also actively involved in the AMMA project from 2005 to 2009, where they led the modelling component and was a member of the Steering Committee.

Overall, Paolo Ruti's work experience demonstrates their expertise and leadership in weather and climate research, as well as their involvement in coordinating projects and advancing climate services in Europe.

Paolo Ruti completed their Master's Degree in Physics from Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna from 1987 to 1992. Paolo then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Geophysics from Università degli Studi di Genova from 1993 to 1996.
