Gal Avital

Head of Bioinformatics at Evogene

Gal Avital has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and computational genomics. They are currently the Head of Bioinformatics at Evogene, a position they started in December 2020. Prior to this role, they worked as a Computational Genomics Scientist at the same company from June 2020 to December 2020.

Before joining Evogene, Gal Avital was a Postdoctoral Researcher at NYU Langone Health from January 2018 to May 2020.

Gal Avital began their professional journey as a Teaching Assistant and completed their Master's degree at Ben Gurion University of the Negev from October 2010 to September 2012.

They then pursued a PHD at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, where they worked as a Teaching Assistant from March 2013 to July 2016. During their PHD, they developed a new method called scDual-Seq to detect host and pathogen transcriptomes simultaneously from individual cells. Their research also focused on studying the evolutionary and developmental miRNA and mRNA regulatory programs during embryogenesis. They completed their PHD in December 2017. Gal Avital also served as a Lecturer at Technion from October 2014 to October 2016.

Gal Avital's education history begins in 2007 when they completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Life Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They then pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree at the same institution from 2010 to 2012, focusing on the study of evolutionary forces acting on the population of mitochondria in the cell. Continuing their academic journey, Avital obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology between 2012 and 2017, where their research focused on regulatory links involving non-coding RNAs in embryonic development. In 2016, they also worked as a predoctoral fellow at NYU School of Medicine, Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, studying the understanding of host pathogen interaction during infection. From 2018 to 2020, Avital pursued a Postdoctoral Fellowship at NYU School of Medicine, specializing in the field of infectious disease.
