Steve Baker

Associate Director Lab Data Engineering at Exscientia

Steve Baker has a diverse work experience spanning multiple companies and roles. Steve began their career at Oxitec Ltd as a Senior Scientist, where they played a significant role in DNA transformation and genetic characterization. Steve also led a project to modernize data collection and processing, resulting in the development of an integrated, data-driven platform. Steve then moved on to The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), where they served as a Research Data Manager. In this role, they designed and implemented a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and data management solutions for protein structure determination workflows. Steve also developed a bioinformatics platform using HAXE, Java, and Python for data analysis and reporting. Later, Steve joined Picker Institute Europe as a Data Manager, responsible for managing data-related tasks. Currently, they are working at Exscientia as an Associate Director of Lab Data Engineering, building on their expertise in data management and engineering.

Steve Baker attended the University of Warwick from 2007 to 2010, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Molecular Genetics. Steve then pursued further education at the University of Birmingham, obtaining a Master of Research (MRes) degree in Biomedical Research in 2011. Steve Baker completed their education at the University of Birmingham, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Molecular Immunology in 2015. Steve also has an Introductory Certificate from the Association for Project Management.
