Rick Bookstaber

Co-founder & Head of Risk at Fabric

Rick Bookstaber has had a long and varied career in the financial industry. Rick began their career in 1977 as a professor at Brigham Young University. Rick then moved to Morgan Stanley in 1984, where they were the first risk manager and worked on the design and implementation of derivatives. In 1994, they became the Chief Risk Officer at Salomon Brothers, where they were in charge of risk management globally for the firm. In 1998, they moved to Moore Capital Management as Head of Risk Management. Rick then moved to Ziff Brothers Investments in 2002, where they were the Managing Director, Head of Risk and Quantitative Portfolio Manager. In 2004, they became a Founding Principal of the long-short quantitative equity hedge fund at FrontPoint Partners. In 2007, they moved to Bridgewater Associates, where they worked on navigating the 2008 Crisis. From 2009 to 2015, they worked at the U.S. Department of Treasury and SEC, where they worked on the Volcker Rule and other regulations to help the risk management process and governance for the U.S. financial system post-2008. In 2015, they became the Chief Risk Officer at the University of California Office of the President. Most recently, in 2020, they became the Co-founder and Head of Risk at Fabric.

Rick Bookstaber received their BA in Economics from Brigham Young University and their Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 1974 and 1977.
