Karume James

Karume James is an experienced legal professional currently serving as an Assistant Federal Defender at Federal Defenders of New York Inc. since May 2021. Previously, Karume worked at The Bronx Defenders from September 2014 to May 2021, holding the positions of Supervising Attorney and Staff Attorney, representing indigent clients in felony and misdemeanor cases. Additionally, Karume contributed to legal education as a Lecturer of Law at Columbia Law School while co-directing the Columbia Law School Holistic Defense Externship. Other relevant experience includes legal internships and roles at various organizations, including Community Coalition and AFSCME Local 3299. Karume holds a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School, a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies with a concentration in Psychology from UCLA, and an Associate of Arts in Humanities & Fine Arts from Riverside City College.
