Nathan Smith possesses extensive experience in the field of evolutionary biology and paleontology. Serving as the Gretchen Augustyn Director and Curator of the Dinosaur Institute at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County since August 2015, Nathan also holds roles as Curator and Associate Curator. Simultaneously, Nathan contributes as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California. Nathan's research expertise is further demonstrated through positions as a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History and The Field Museum. Previously, Nathan worked as an Assistant Professor at Howard University. Academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Science in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Chicago, a Master of Science in Geoscience from the University of Iowa, and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Augustana College.
