Wei Qiao

Chief Technical Officer at First Contact Entertainment

Wei Qiao has a diverse background in the gaming and software development industry. They started their career in 2001 working in the Purdue Rendering & Perceptualization Lab, conducting research on advanced rendering techniques. They also worked at nanoHUB.org, where they focused on graphics research and developed scientific computing applications.

In 2004, Qiao joined Rhythm & Hues Studios, where they specialized in VFX software R&D, focusing on fluid simulations and hardware accelerated visualization of fluids for film production.

Moving into the gaming industry, Qiao joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2005 as a Sr. Software Engineer, where they worked for 8 years. During this time, they gained experience in game development and software engineering.

In 2013, Qiao transitioned to Robotoki, where they held the role of Lead Engine Programmer. They worked on developing engine features for the post-apocalyptic survival game Human Element, utilizing CryEngine 3 and Unreal 4.

After their time at Robotoki, Qiao joined Starbreeze Studios in 2015 as a Lead Engineer, contributing to various projects within the company.

Their most recent role at First Contact Entertainment began in 2016, where Qiao served as the Chief Technical Officer. They were responsible for the core technology development of virtual reality games and experiences. Additionally, they focused on creating narrative-driven AAA quality VR content with established and new IPs.

Overall, Qiao has a strong background in graphics research, software development, and game design, with expertise in virtual reality and engine programming.

Wei Qiao earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management, with a minor in Management Information Systems, from Purdue University Daniels School of Business from 1999 to 2003. During the same period, Wei also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Purdue University. Continuing their education, Wei pursued a Master of Science degree in Computer Science at Purdue University from 2003 to 2006.
