Mario Garcia-Armas

Mario Garcia-Armas has a diverse work experience in the field of machine learning and software development. Mario is currently a Staff Machine Learning Engineer - Tech Lead at Flipboard since June 2022. Prior to this, they held various roles at Flipboard, including Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Tech Lead from June 2021 to June 2022, Senior Machine Learning Engineer from August 2020 to June 2021, and Machine Learning Engineer from January 2019 to August 2020.

Before joining Flipboard, Mario worked at A Thinking Ape as a Software Development Engineer. Mario held the position of Software Development Engineer III - Machine Learning from June 2017 to January 2019, where they designed and deployed a recommendation system and managed junior developers. Mario also served as a Software Development Engineer II - Machine Learning from June 2016 to June 2017, where they created machine learning pipeline infrastructure and deployed models for predicting ROI. Additionally, they worked as a Software Development Engineer II from June 2015 to June 2016, implementing backend services for game features.

Mario's earlier experience includes a role as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at The University of British Columbia from July 2010 to May 2015. In this role, they delivered lectures, facilitated student learning through workshops, and provided tutoring in undergraduate mathematics courses.

Prior to their time at The University of British Columbia, Mario worked at the University of Havana, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Mario served as an Instructor from September 2008 to July 2010 and as a Junior Cryptography Researcher from September 2008 to July 2010. In the latter role, they surveyed existing research on elliptic curve cryptographic schemes and implemented operations in a Maple library.

Mario's earliest experience includes working as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Havana, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science from September 2005 to July 2008.

Mario Garcia-Armas holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from The University of British Columbia, which they obtained from 2010 to 2015. Prior to that, they completed a Master's Degree in Mathematics at the University of Havana from 2008 to 2009. Mario also obtained their Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Havana, where they studied from 2004 to 2008.
